Tour Plan

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m / 5,905 ft) to Machame Camp (3,010m / 9,875 ft)

The adventure begins at the bustling Machame Gate, where you register and meet your mountain crew. The day's trek winds steadily uphill through a magnificent and dense rainforest, a world of lush greenery, hanging moss, and sounds of exotic birds. After 5-7 hours of hiking, you emerge from the tree line just as you arrive at Machame Camp, where you are rewarded with your first stunning, clear views of the Kibo summit in the distance, a thrilling preview of the goal ahead.

Day 2: Machame Camp (3,010m / 9,875ft) to Shira Camp (3,845m / 12,615ft)

Leaving the rainforest behind, you now enter the heath and moorland zone, characterized by shorter vegetation and giant lobelias and groundsels. The trail becomes rockier and steeper as you ascend a rocky ridge. Today is shorter in distance but involves a significant gain in altitude, making it a crucial day for acclimatization. You will feel the air getting thinner and cooler. Upon reaching the summit of the Shira Plateau, you are rewarded with breathtaking, panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the imposing peak of Kibo directly ahead. Shira Camp, located on the plateau, provides a stark and beautiful campsite under vast, starry skies, helping your body continue to adapt to the higher elevation.

Day 3: Shira Camp (3,845m / 12,615ft) to Lava Tower (4,630m / 15,190ft) and down to Barranco Camp (3,960m / 12,990ft)

This is a key day for acclimatization, following the essential "climb high, sleep low" principle. You trek east across the Shira Plateau, ascending through the alpine desert landscape towards the iconic Lava Tower, a massive volcanic rock formation. Reaching this high point of 4,630 meters for lunch challenges your body and significantly improves your ability to adjust to the altitude. After lunch, you begin a steep descent into the Great Barranco Valley. This descent is a welcome relief and allows your body to recover in a more oxygen-rich environment. The scenic Barranco Camp is set in a valley directly below the imposing Barranco Wall, which you will face the next morning.

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,960m / 12,990ft) to Karanga Camp (4,035m / 13,240ft) and on to Barafu Camp (4,673m / 15,331ft)

The day starts with the famous ascent of the Barranco Wall, which appears more daunting than it is. This is a non-technical but steep scramble that requires you to use your hands for balance at times. Conquering the "Breakfast Wall" is an exhilarating experience and offers fantastic photo opportunities of the valley below. On the other side, you trek through a series of scenic hills and valleys until you reach Karanga Camp for lunch. From here, you continue on a steep and rugged path up a moraine ridge to your final summit base camp, Barafu Camp. The camp is rocky and exposed, and you will feel the significant altitude. After an early dinner, you are advised to rest and prepare for the imminent summit push, which will begin just a few hours later.

Day 5: Summit Day! Barafu Camp (4,673m / 15,331ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341ft) and down to Mweka Camp (3,080m / 10,105ft)

You will be awakened around midnight for a light tea and biscuit breakfast before beginning the final ascent. Trekking by the light of your headlamp in the cold, dark night, this is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the entire climb. The trail consists of a long, steep zigzag up loose scree towards Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim. Reaching Stella Point as the sun rises over the Mawenzi Peak is a moment of immense emotion and relief, offering your first spectacular views into the crater. From Stella Point, you have a final 1-2 hour trek along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the true summit of Africa. Celebrate your incredible achievement, take photographs at the sign, and absorb the magnificent views of the glaciers. After a short time, you begin the long descent, first back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest, and then continuing down to the more oxygen-rich environment of Mweka Camp, where you can finally get a well-deserved, full night's sleep.

Day 6: Mweka Camp (3,080m / 10,105ft) to Mweka Gate (1,640m / 5,380ft)

The final day is a pleasant and continuous descent through the lush montane rainforest. The path is steep and can be slippery, so trekking poles are highly recommended. The rich, thick air at this lower altitude is a welcome sensation. After 3-4 hours, you will arrive at Mweka Gate. Here, you will sign out of the park and receive your official summit certificates from the Kilimanjaro National Park authority. A green certificate is awarded for reaching Stella Point, and a gold certificate for reaching Uhuru Peak. From the gate, you will be transported back to your hotel in Moshi for a much-needed shower, a celebratory meal, and a chance to reflect on your monumental accomplishment.
